Song - 22: The Path to Liberation

Song - 1.
भज गोविन्दं भज गोविन्दं, गोविन्दं भज मढूमते|
संप्राप्तेसंनिहितेकालेिहि िहि रक्षनत डुक्ंुकरणे||
Bhajagovindam bhajagovindam govindam bhajamudhamate |
samprapte sannihite kale nahi nahi raksati dukrnkarane ||

Translation:
Seek Govind, Seek Govind, Seek Govind, O Fool! When the appointed time (death) comes grammar-rules surely will not save you.

This sloka is a chorus and repeated after each sloka.
Adi Sankaracharya here when referring to Grammar (dukrn-karane) implies all the secular sciences cannot save the soul
when death approaches.
All our worldly pursuits/actions need to focus on the ultimate goal of self-realization.
Bhaja, means worship, which does not mean ritualistic routine, but true Bhajan is ‘seva’ – service.
The true Bhajan is total subjective surrender in love and devotion at the altar of the lord.
The process of self-liquidation at the feet of the lord is classified under nine types (Nava-vidha bhakti)

3. Smaranam (constantly thinking)
4. Padasevanam (Adoring the feet of the lord in a spirit of self-obliteration)
5. Archanam (worship with Vedic hymns)

7. Dasyam (serving the lord)
8. Sakhyam (to invoke the lord as a friend)
9. Atma nivedanam (to offer oneself in total self-surrender to the lord)

Govinda means –
1. One who realized the substratum, or the very essence – the Truth.
2. One who protects the cattle, or the very essence behind the all living things.
3. He who confers speech – or one who enlivens all sense organs
4. He who is known thru the Vedas – the supreme reality indicated by the Maha Vakyas
In short Govinda is the supreme Brahman or the Atman.
The significance of repetition of Bhaja Govinda is also explained as..
1. Frist, Seek Govinda represents seek guru. Seek a capable guru.
2. Second, Seek Govinda represents seek knowledge. Seek the knowledge that aids in self-realization.
3. Govindam Bhaja… , With that knowledge, mediate and contemplate to seek Govinda, the all-pervading Govinda.

Song - 22: The Path to Liberation
1 rathyaa charpata virachita kanthah = The Yogin who wears but a godadi,
2 punya- apunya vivarjita panthah; = who walks the path beyond merit and demerit,
3 yogee yoga niyojita vitto = whose mind is joined in perfect union with its goal,
4 ramate baala-unmattavad eva. = revels (in God), and lives as a child or a madman.

Comments:
The previous song ended with the two essential qualities an aspirant has to possess
to tread this path. The essence of this verse is to spell out the means or the Sadhana that
identifies the spiritual path to the goal of Liberation, as opposed to the means to any other
goal. The spiritual goal is made reachable through Sadhana or spiritual practices.
The verse outlines the threefold means towards Liberation in a mystical language
that needs to be carefully interpreted. This verse, though appearing quite simple, goes very
deep, indeed, and sets apart the goal of Liberation from other goals offered by various
religious practices.
Each of the three means is described in each of the first three Padas respectively:
i) The Path of Renunciation

The Vedas are a body which provides the knowledge by which one may achieve his
desired goal. That goal is threefold: One may desire worldly prosperity; a second may desire
to attain a heavenly existence; and a third may desire Liberation from Samsara itself, i.e. he
desires to go beyond all duality and attain the non-dua, permanentl Reality. This is the
highest goal beyond which there is nothing further to attain.
The first and second goals have desire as their basis. The third is unique in that its
basis is RENUNCIATION. All worldly as well as heavenly desires are renounced. This is
depicted in the first Pada by the simile of a Godadi. The Godadi represents simplicity itself.
It actually means a garment which is made of old pieces of rags discarded by others; these
are stitched together to make a garment. Can one wear anything simpler than that?
The spirit of Renunciation is the first essential feature of the Sadhana that leads one
to Liberation. This path is to be trod by one who has the sole desire for God alone, not for
anything created by Him such as available on earth or in heaven.

ii) The Path Beyond Dharma

Here another important distinction is made which makes Liberation a unique goal.
The other two goals are attained by acquiring sufficient merits, and avoiding all demerits
which may oppose it. Merits and demerits are earned through actions. The third goal (of
Liberation) has no desire for any outer object and so there is no need for earning merits in
its case. Hence, it does not require any actions to be performed to attain it. It needs only
knowledge of the Lord’s nature to “attain” it.
This explains the second Pada of the verse, which says that the means to attain -
Liberation is beyond merits and demerits.
In terms of the Vedas, the first goal has the Karma Kanda as its authority. The second
has the Upasana Kanda as its authority. And the third has the Jnana Kanda (or Upanishads)
as its authority. These are three distinct paths leading one to three distinct goals.
The first two goals fall under the Pravritti Marga or the path of Action. The third
goal falls under Nivritti Marga or the path of Renunciation of Action.
iii) Abidance in the Self:

The spiritual practice resorted to by the aspirant of the third goal, i.e. Liberation, is
also very different from that of aspirants of the other two goals. The seeker of Liberation
devotes himself to meditation on the Supreme Lord. This is called Nididhyasana in Vedanta.
Its essential characteristic is to abide in the Self as much as possible, until the stage is
reached when he becomes fully God-conscious. This is a state of “being”, not of “doing”.
Perfect abidance in one’s Self is called Self-realisation.
More will be said about this glorious state as we study further texts such as the
Upanishads and the Bhagavad Geeta.
The Attainment of the Goal

The last Pada refers, again in a very indirect manner, to the state of Self-realisation.
The reference to a child or a madman is to reflect the mental state of the realized sage.
The sage becomes egoless. The closest example of such a state we can understand is
seen in a little child or baby, in whom the ego-consciousness has not yet manifested. Such is
the state of the saint of God – he becomes innocent and guileless. A child acts
spontaneously, without any interference from any ego.
Another example is that of a madman. This may sound insulting when applied to a
sage. However, every simile is a comparison of a similar quality, not all the qualities. What is
common between a sage and a madman? A madman acts contrary to all social norms or
expectations; hence he is called “mad”. The sage also acts from standards that are not
accepted by “non-realised” people! His actions appear to ordinary men to be similar to a
“mad-man”. An example will help to clarify what is meant here:
Story of Sadasiva Brahmendra
Acharyaji here recounted the story of Sadasiva Brahmendra. This saint lived as an
Avadhoot, that is, one who moved about naked. Once he inadvertently walked past the
harem of a King, which made the ladies scream at him. In anger, the King chopped off his
hand, but the saint kept walking as though nothing happened. Then the King realized that
this was not an ordinary ‘fool’. He ran up to him to apologize. Sadasiva turned around to see
the King waving a ‘hand’ in his hand. The King told him it was his hand. Only then did the
saint realize what had happened. He promptly took the ‘hand’ and placed it in its position,
and it became one with his body again!
Our concept of enjoyment is wealth, woman and fame. But the saint’s joys are of a
different kind. Hence he appears to us as a child or a madman.
A madman is merely one who sees what you don’t and you see
what he does not – that is the only difference. We do not have a visa
into his world; nor does he have one into our world!
